Were Marlon Brando and James Dean Gay?

These are not  topics I would normally write about, but a lot readers have been asking me  this question about these two men. I decided to do some research and find out what I could.

Here are some quotes from readers have read the book Brando Unzipped, written by Darwin Porter:

One section of the book, reads: From Rock Hudson to Vivien Leigh, from Bette Davis to Cary Grant, Brando slept around, even managing to seduce two of America’s First Ladies..

He was insatiable in the bedroom and slept his way through some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, both male and female.

Darwin Porter claims that the bisexual Godfather star had sexual liaisons with James Dean, Cary Grant, Montgomery Cliff and Sir John Gielgud.

James Dean was one of Brando’s most lasting yet troubled gay relationships. They had a relationship for a number of years but it was always turbulent. At one point they had a big stand-up fight at a party in Santa Monica, California, witnessed by dozens of people.

His affair with Montgomery Clift was a long and enduring relationship.

Marlon had a bit of a fling with Cary Grant, spending a weekend with him in San Francisco. Cary was also pursuing the actor Stewart Granger, who became another of Marlon’s conquests.
Marlon admired John Gielgud but they didn’t have a relationship, rather, Brando performed sexual favours for Gielgud and told friends, “I owed it to him because he really helped me with lines in Julius Cesar.”

Brando supposedly admitted that he had homosexual relationships in his 1976 biography The Only Contender.
He was quoted as saying, “Like a large number of men, I, too, have had homosexual experiences, and I am not ashamed.”

I also found this quote on imdb.com:

“ Maybe it was because he was really bisexual, or maybe just because he was such a good actor, but somehow we fans had no idea that the love of his life was Wally Cox. ” – SweetHotAngel

He was married to women three times.

From what I have read, I would think Marlon Brando was Bisexual.

According to wikipedia.org, There have been several claims and assertions that Dean had sexual relationships with both men and women.

William Bast, one of Dean’s closest friends, was Dean’s first biographer. He published a revealing update of his first book, in which, after years of successfully dodging the question as to whether he and Dean were sexually involved, he finally stated that they were. In this second book, Bast describes the difficult circumstances of their involvement and also deals frankly with some of Dean’s other reported gay relationships, notably the actor’s friendship with Rogers Brackett, the influential producer of radio dramas who encouraged Dean in his career and provided him with useful professional contacts.

Journalist Joe Hyams suggests that any gay activity Dean might have been involved in appears to have been strictly “for trade”, as a means of advancing his career.

Dean’s fellow biker and Night Watch member John Gilmore claims he and Dean “experimented” with gay acts on one occasion in New York.

Dean avoided the draft by registering as a homosexual, then classified by the US government as a mental disorder. When questioned about his orientation, he is reported to have said, “No, I am not a homosexual. But, I’m also not going to go through life with one hand tied behind my back.”

The trailer of the film, The Joshua Tree, makes him look bisexual. Watch the video below.

James Dean also had relationships with women such as Pier Angeli and Ursula Andres.

Some people claim he was gay. Some claim he was bisexual. Some claim he slept with men only to advance in his career. I can’t find any conclusive information that proves he was gay.

  1. Who cares if the dudes liked dick. they were great actors.

  2. If it’s not a big deal, then why do straight people get so upset when confronted with the fact that their favorite actor was gay or bi? There’s more on this at:
    http://homohistory.blogspot.com/2012/12/james-deans-gay-lovers.html

  3. Interesting research project. I’ve read in numerous accounts about Brando’s bisexuality and his admission of such relationships. Sal Mineo co-starred with Dean in “Rebels Without A Cause” and in his biography he acknowledges that he and Dean had at least one sexual encounter. Given the era in which these performers lived, we’ll probably never really know the truth. Nice article.

  4. I know it’s completely irrelevant, but what is the font used on this page? thanks~

  5. Never gave these two dudes some thoughts until now. I love them both already! I wish I was alive already during their time. ;)

  7. Thanks for liking my poems. It was very nice of you indeed.

  8. It´s very easy to distinguish the truth from the lies. Just read all the books about Dean with open mind. Do not think of him as of hetero or homosexual WHILE READING. You can even write down some score (on whether he was Bi or GAY) if you want.

I read seven books about him. I came to the conclusion that all the people who really KNEW Dean in person – but very deeply, not just for a few months – spoke about Dean as of a bisexual.

However, those who did not know Dean and only made their books by interviewing the people who really knew the actor in person… well, those people interviewed Dean´s friends and then made their own conclusions about Dean. Some, like Paul Alexander, only copied informations from John Gilmore – who knew Dean from 1953 to 1955, and who was also Dean´s BF for three months – and then came to the conclusion that he was gay. But Gilmore openly described their relationship and said that Dean also liked and actively pursued women – not from the fear of “acknowledging” his own homosexuality, but simply because he was not 100 percent gay at all.

Bill Bast, who also knew Dean and who is openly gay, said between lines that unlike him, Dean was openly experimenting with gay sex, just because he wanted to experiment. Bast said that Dean was not gay at all, but not heterosexual either. That is a clear statement that Dean was really bisexual. Bast really did not need to hide anything from public – everybody knows he is gay and that those two had sex on a few occassions.

Both of these gentlemen said that the Pier Angeli thing was only a sex thing. I believe that it was Gilmore who said that Jimmy had a new girlfriend (or merely a sex-friend) every second day, and that he sometimes slept with guys also. Barbara Glenn was one of his real female loves of his short life. They dated on and off for two years. Gilmore acknowledges Angeli, Glenn, Liz Sheridan and few other chicks as the girls Dean really dated and who were not just PR relationships.

Dean was very openly BI and Joe Hyams – also his friend – said that he wanted to start a family one day. Not just as a beard, but a real family. But his problem was that he was incapable of a real love because he was like a bottomless hole. He sucked every person – regardless their sexuality – bone dry of their love, and when he was done with them, he discarded them. He desperately wanted love, but he did not know how to commit – neither to a guy not to a girl. THAT was his biggest problem. He was not tortured because of his alleged homosexuality. He was simply f****d up. Both Gilmore and Bast said that Dean found the sexual orientation thing “overrated”, and that he did not want to be labeled. Monty Clift, however, WAS gay. Marlon Brando was BI.
